Golden Hour Magic: A Sunset Sunflower Field Session with 7 Shetland Sheepdogs
There are moments as a photographer that feel almost unreal, like stepping into a painting. This sunset session in a glowing sunflower field was one of those times! Made even more magical by the stars of the evening: seven gorgeous Shetland Sheepdogs.
Okay, I have to admit, it was not a big challenge because this session was kind of a personal one. My friend and her five Shelties came to meet us, my boyfriend, two Shelties and I at this sunflower field for a last-minute-change-of-plan kind of session.
When the sun is low on the horizon, it sets the whole field ablaze in golden light. The tall sunflowers became the perfect backdrop for the Shelties’ fluffy coats and sparkling eyes. Choosing this spot for the session gave us everything we wanted: bold colors, natural beauty, and that whimsical “summer evening” feeling you just can’t fake.
The real challenge? The sunflowers are much taller than the Shelties! At ground level, all we could see were the dogs in the stems. The solution? A little teamwork. My friend kindly offered her back as the perfect “platform” so the Shelties could be lifted just high enough to shine in front of the flowers and offer an incredible sunset behind, the perfect spot! It might not have looked glamorous behind the scenes, but the results were absolutely worth it. A little editing magic and you got this gorgeous result, like no one was there!
Sunset light has a way of turning ordinary moments into works of art. The Shelties’ coats lit up in shades of copper and gold, while the sunflowers framed them like nature’s spotlight. This is why golden hour is my favorite time to shoot, it creates warmth and softness that can’t be replicated by any lights.
The best part of this session wasn’t just the photos, it was the moment, the laughs and funny moments we all shared together and the opportunity I had to have a few shots of my family. I love being a photographer, but it often means that I’m not in the photos, or I’m alone in them! My friend was kind enough to try her best and take a few shots of us and then, my boyfriend (photographer in training lol) took some of me and our Shelties. Precious photos that I’ll be forever grateful for.
These are the kind of memories that become family treasures, framed on walls and passed down in albums for years to come.
If this sunflower field session sparked your imagination, now is the perfect time to create your own golden hour memories. Whether it’s your furry best friend, your whole family, or both, I’d love to capture these fleeting summer evenings for you.
Unfortunately, the Sunflower season is already ending, but there’s still flowers or beautiful and colorful trees ahead! Fall is MY favorite season to shoot and I have the best locations for you!
